Zach hit by a car

While biking to school yesterday Zach was "hit" by a car.  It was more of a bump.  As hee was heading to Craig High School he stopped at the cross walk and the woman was at the stop sign.  He though she saw him so he proceeded to turn into the High School drive way.  She did not see him so she ran into him.  He fell off his bike landing on his elbow and his knee was hit by the bike more than the car, but was otherwise O.K.. The woman did check to see if he was ok and another man, who witnessed it, asked him if he was alright, but Zach said he was fine.  In fact, Zach told the woman, "I'm sure you have other places you need to be.  I'm fine and I don't want to be late for class." So not only did he make it to French class on time, he also didn't say anything to anyone about what had just happened.
It wasn't until the end of the class (which happens to be the last period) when he realized he needed me to pick him up because his bike wasn't working.  He tried my cell, but when I'm at work I have it on silent and he didn't program the YMCA's number (my work) in his phone.  So he went to student services to ask them to call me.  In order to get their attention to call me quickly, he told them about the accident.  So that is when I get the phone call.  They called the Y and I happen to be the one who answered.  They tell me, "your son, Zach seemed to have been in a bit of an accident.  He was hit by a car.  His bike is wrecked.  He says his knee hurts - don't think it's broken.  We called the police.  Zach was wondering if you could come and pick him up because his bike is totaled."  I talked with Zach for a bit to make sure he was ok and to get a better understanding of what happened.  My mind was reeling!  As a parent, a million horror movies play at once when these types of things happen.  My boss, Joe, had no problem with me leaving early.  Luckily, I only had a half hour left to my shift.
When I get there Zach is sitting in the AP office giving his account to the police officer.  He is calm and answering the officer with as much detail as he can remember.  The lady did give Zach her contact information which he passed on to officer.  The three of us then walked out to check out the bike and the first thing I notice is that Zach isn't even walking with a limp and the bike looks fine. So much for it being "totaled!"  Upon further inspection, I point out to Zach that the chain just fell off.  He thought the handle bars had been bent, but they just got shifted out of position and was easily fixed.  We told the officer that we weren't going to press charges or take Zach to the doctor unless he got a lot worse.  If that happened we were to call the police so they could update their files.
On the drive home I told Zach I wanted the woman's phone number.  He didn't want me to call her because he didn't want to make her feel bad or worry about him.  I told him, this woman is probably riddled with guilt and worry already.  I called her and assured her he was alright and we weren't going to sue her.  She cried with relief.
This morning he was a little sore.  But once he got moving around it got better.  He likes that he has an awesome story and wasn't hurt too bad.  He's having a little too much fun with it.  But hey, I'd rather that, than it have been something serious.  Gotta give a little shout out to Our Heavenly Father for watchin' over my boy!

Since I've been gone...

I haven't posted a lot because, I don't have access to a computer like before.  Both laptop computer cords died.  That means we need to buy new ones.  That requires money I'm not willing to spend.  Matt brought his work laptop home which has the same type of plug needed for my HP laptop.  Voila! I have power! Now I can finally download the 171 pictures that have been stuck on my camera, phew!

It's been a crazy busy couple of months.  I started working at the YMCA at the beginning of September.  I'm just at the front desk welcome center.  The work in general is not that hard, but the learning process of a new job is never fun.  Luckily, I have a good boss and awesome coworkers.  My friend, Charli is the reason I even applied for the job.  She is the one who told me they were hiring.  She works there along with another homeschooling mom, Jessica.  What is kind of funny is that all three of us are on the Quest (home school co-op) board.  However, we don't usually work the same schedules at the Y.

Quest has started it's fall semester.  We have definitely grown.  I think this Fall registration has seen the biggest increase in families.  Zach told me that when he thinks back on his childhood, Quest is going to be a big positive memory for him.  I'm so glad we have been involved with this co-op for so many years!  Our kids love the youth group at church, but getting to be around people who are homeschooling too has a special place in our hearts.  Maybe it's because they have sometimes needed to defend homeschooling while at church, where as, with other homeschoolers we can relax a bit more.

Zach is now 14 and a Freshman. Goes to Craig High School for French classes, but is otherwise still homeschooled.  He is still a big science nerd and has skipped ahead to biology since the normal required science for a 9th grader was too easy for him.  Other than, that he is right on course in school.
Zach and Sam joined Cross Country.  Zach is finding it a physical challenge.  But he is noticing, as he practices, that he is improving.

Samantha is 11 and in the 6th grade now.  She is growing so fast!  She is as tall as Zach was at 12.  She goes through clothes like crazy!  Being dyslexic has not hindered her too much.  She's doing really well in school since homeschooling allows her to learn at her pace and style.
Sam has been enjoying Cross Country.  She gets an endorphin high when she runs.  She loves it!  This last race she said she got a little sick, but a drink of water took care of that.

Matt is still doing well at his job at State Collections.  He was on their softball team this summer.
They were, unfortunately, the worst team of all the leagues.  But hey, it's just for fun right?  Matt being in softball kind of got us all into it.  For Father's Day we even went to the Batcave.  It's an old theater turned in to batting cages.
It was hot in there and smelled of sweat so we took the fun to a park after we had enough.  Ah, fresh air!

I can't believe the summer is over.  It went by so fast!  Of course this blog is just a short, "where we are at" sort of blog and if I wrote everything that went this summer, it would take hours/days to finish.  So, I will try and catch up on what happened this summer.  I already started Samantha's blog about her trip to California. It will be back dated of course so you will have to look for that one as if I posted it before this one.  Confused yet?  Welcome to my world.

MS flare up from heat.

so apparently I can do a workout inside my house for 45-50 minutes (as long as it is cool in the house) and no MS symptoms show up, but work outside in the muggy humid heat for the same amount of time and I get MS flare up galore.
Hands are shaking and weak. My left eyelid even closed randomly and wouldn't open for a couple of minutes. It's all better at least for now. Still waiting for the hands to go back to normal. I'm writing this blog while speaking into my phone and it translates it into type for me. I really like this technology. I just hope the shaking goes away before I have to interpret tomorrow.

Last Trial MRI & testing - Good Friday shenanigans!

What a crazy day!  It started off normal for a trial day.  Grabbed my purse, salt water, stool sample and was out the door.  Got there without a hiccup, met with Courtney, and as we walked to labs where they would draw 15 vials of blood I check my phone.  Zach left a message that he might need to go to the emergency room.  Zach has the tenancy to exaggerate, but I call him back anyway to find out about this new world ending calamity.  His stomach hurt so bad he was sure his appendix was about to rupture.  I told him it was probably just gas and to just give it a while and it would pass.  I decide to call my friend Charli and ask her to check on  him anyway...just in case.
Back to testing.  They drained me of 14 vials of blood because Courtney took mercy on me when it started to pinch.  Then we proceeding to the room where I do the cognitive and physical test and they ask some health questions.  That went really well.  I told them I only have some tingle and mild weakness in my right hand that only flare up when I'm too hot.  While waiting for my visit with Dr. Fleming I call Charli to see what's what.  She tells me she called Dean Clinic and while on the phone with a nurse and Matt, Zach doubles over in pain.  She decides to take him to the ER and meet Matt there.  At this point I am actually worried.  The team at UW are super kind and tell me to let them know if I need to leave.  Since Matt was closer than me and was already on his way, I figured I would let him handle it.
Meanwhile, back at the UW Dr. Fleming is running late.  This is a problem.  I have to meet with Dr. Luzzio before my MRI.  Dr Luzzio does the "drunk test" as I like to call it.  It's similar to the test they give suspected drunk drivers with a few added test.  Like, an eye exam, muscle strength, and light poking with a needle to see if it feels the same on both legs, arms, feet, etc.  It's soon apparent that is not going to happen and I would have to come back for a separate visit just for Dr. Luzzio.  Oh, and another stool sample deposit.  So, then we proceed to the MRI when Matt called to update me.
Apparently by the time Matt arrived at the ER Zach was feeling better, because IT WAS JUST GAS!  They don't to check in.  So Charli decides to take him home.  As she is dropping him off several police cars descend on Glen Street!  A man running away from the cops jumps my neighbor's fence to try and get away.  Charli decides it was best to gather both kids and take them to her house.  Thank God she was there!
Right before my MRI I decided to call Charli and get her story of what happened at the ER, and that is when I heard about the cops and the criminal.  The UW trial team is floored by the happenings.  They even went looking for police reports while I was in the MRI machine but didn't fine anything.  I later found out from one of my neighbors that the guy was apprehended. Phew!

Stop the world, I want to get off!

It's been a long hard day!  I had a MRI at St. Mary's/Dean in Madison today.  I actually got to see my brain pictures right away.  I have 2 new active lesions.  Oh joy.  My neurologist wasn't there today, but her assistant was and so was a student who was shadowing her - both nice ladies.  After going over the MRI images, we talked about my options.  Since I'm not on birth control there is only one drug I can take, Copaxone.  In case you are wondering why birth control matters, it has to do with birth defects and miscarriages.  Copaxone is just less dangerous for the developing fetus, but I would have to stop all MS meds if I got pregnant.  I'm actually thinking of going on birth control so I have more options.  Also Copaxone is a daily injection.  Crap!  I hate shots!  I miss my worms!!  (See the bottom of my post about the worms I drank if you have no idea what I'm talking about.)  Anyway, I'm not too thrilled about taking any of the MS medications.  There are always side effects.  At least the co-pay for Copaxone is reasonable - $25/month.  But for us, an extra $25 expense plus the doctor appointments, test, gas driving back and forth from Madison all can cause financial strain that I don't need right now.  I hope my Pampered Chef business takes off so I can afford to take care of my freakin' disease!
Well, enough of that.  After I got home I helped the kids with some school work and then went to take my friend, Monica, to a doctor appointment.  She had the same procedure Karen had to stretch out her esophagus.  She has had this done before without problems, but it seems this time didn't go as well.  She has been in some serious pain and hasn't eaten for 2 days.  The doctors were concerned there was possibly an infection or a tear.  Thankfully, there was neither.  She got better drugs that would coat her throat so she could eat.  I pray she feels better soon.
Now, I'm waiting for Matt to get home.  He said he wants to take us to a high school production in Beloit of the musical, "Oklahoma."  I will blog about how it went later.

Sam's 11th Birthday

Sam turned 11 today.  When we took her measurements today we were surprised to see that she is the same height Zach was at 11.  That is the first time that has happened. Usually she is about and inch shorter.
Look at them at 10 compared to them at 11.

Aunt Kiki was the first one to give Sam a present...A new awesome out-fit!

Zach got Sam a bucket of perler beads.  She love crafting with them.

Matt and I got Sam an MP3 player since her old one died and an other out-fit since she out grew most of her clothes.

Instead of cake Sam requested apple crisp.  YUM!
(sorry for the bad singing)
Yes, the tall middle candle relight just before Zach stopped recording, but have no fear she blew it out.

Side note, I can't believe how warm it has been.  By the end of the day, most of the snow has melted.

New years 2013

Matt had to work New Years Eve day so I decided to take the kids to Wausau to see my new niece Charlotte (Charlie).  We left Sunday, Dec. 30th after church.  We decided to stop at Mom Baierl's new house.  Mabe was there visiting.  Had a short visit before continuing to my parents house.  New Years Eve day we spend most of the day snowmobiling.  What a blast.  We stopped at Jamars to eat lunch.  I haven't driven a snowmobile since my kids were born!  That's more than 13 years ago!

Then we went to Jer and Laura's house to ring in the New Year.  Got pizzas and Jer deep fried boneless chicken wings.  Yummy!  We played cards while Charlotte slept and Sydney and Sam played.  Sydney had Sam just a hoppin'!

We Skyped with Matt too.  He was "with" us while we counted down!  We even gave each other a "cyber-kiss."
New Years day was laid back.  My dad pulled Sam and Zach in a sled behind the ATV and then the snowmobile.

Zach got to drive the ATV by himself just around the farm.

Jer, Laura and the girls arrived late afternoon.  Sydney played vigorously with Sam again and then zonked out.

I even took a nap with Charlotte in my parent's room.  Guys watched the Rose Bowl.  Wisconsin lost against Stanford.

It was such a lovely time with my family.  And it went by too fast.  After leaving my parents house we went to visit Rose aka MomB at her new house.  Mabe was there visiting too so we got lunch and then went to Lori's

Visiting with cousins is always a blast!
